Brief history

As an independent educational and research structural unit of the Faculty of Law, the Department (at that time, of International Law) was established in accordance with the order of the Rector of the University of 1 February 2001. The newly created department was headed by Doctor of Law, Professor A. Georgitsa.

At one time, the department was also staffed by Doctor of Law, Professor M. Nykyforak, Doctor of Law, Professor N. Yakymchuk, Doctor of Law S. Vyshnovetska, Deputy Chairman of the Commercial Court of Chernivtsi Region I. Skrypnychuk, PhD in Law, Associate Professor L. Hizhdivan.

Activities

Within the framework of the agreement signed between Yuriy Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University and Stefan the Great University of Suceava (Romania), the possibility of parallel study of students of the Master’s programme in International Law (speciality 293) of the Law Faculty of Yuriy Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University at the Stefan the Great University of Suceava in the Master’s programme of the Faculty of Law and Administration was agreed. In the future, upon successful completion of their studies, these students will be able to obtain a relevant speciality and receive Ukrainian and Romanian Master’s degrees in international and European law.

The academic staff of the department has published a significant number of scientific works, more than 30 monographs and textbooks, more than 15 educational and methodological manuals, but the work of the department in the field of organisation and support of the educational process is constantly improving. For this purpose, close contacts are maintained and the experience of teaching and research work of the relevant departments in other higher education institutions of Ukraine is studied.

The Department’s professors fruitfully cooperate with government agencies and legal institutions, and participate in the preparation and holding of national and international scientific and practical conferences, round tables, debates, and seminars.
